Marsha P. Johnson

Queer Rights Pioneer

Marsha P. Johnson is sometimes referred to as the “Rosa Parks of the LGBT movement.”

Johnson was an activist, drag performer, and sex worker. She fought for her rights and the rights of the LGBTQ+ community at a time when doing so put her life in jeopardy.

Johnson was a key figure of the 1960s gay rights movement and, as legend has it, threw the brick that ignited the Stonewall riots, which were the catalyst for the movement and have inspired many pride marches ever since.

In 1992, Johnson’s body was found in the Hudson River. Her death was ruled a suicide, but those who knew her disagreed. A recent Netflix documentary, The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson, celebrates her life and investigates the mysterious circumstances of her death.
